Step-by-Step Process of Customs Clearance

Documentation Collection & Verification

All necessary shipping documents are collected from the importer/exporter, including: Commercial Invoice Packing List Bill of Lading / Air Waybill Import/Export License (if applicable) Certificate of Origin Purchase Order

01

HS Code Classification & Duty Assessment

Each item in the shipment is classified under the correct Harmonized System (HS) Code to determine applicable customs duties, GST, and taxes. Misclassification can lead to penalties or delays.

02

Filing of Customs Declaration

A customs declaration—Shipping Bill (for exports) or Bill of Entry (for imports)—is filed electronically with the customs authorities via ICEGATE or relevant portals.

03

Customs Examination / Inspection (if required)

Based on risk assessment, customs may flag the shipment for physical examination, X-ray screening, or document scrutiny. Low-risk shipments may be cleared without inspection

04

Duty & Tax Payment

Once assessed, applicable customs duties, IGST, cess, and other charges are paid through the authorized banking channels or digital payment systems.

05

Customs Clearance Approval

After successful verification and payment, customs grants Out of Charge (OOC) status for imports or Let Export Order (LEO) for exports, officially clearing the shipment.

06

Cargo Release & Delivery

With clearance complete, the cargo is released from the port, ICD, or CFS. The logistics provider arranges final delivery to the consignee's location or shipping line (for exports).

07

Post-Clearance Documentation & Recordkeeping

Final customs documents, receipts, and declarations are shared with the client and safely archived for future audits, returns, or reference.
